1 of the reasons to heart Miranda July...
her MySpace bulletins
----------------- Bulletin Message -----------------
From:
Miranda July
Date: 22 Nov 2007, 00:06
hello,
for those of you who are american, you now have a holiday. there may be times during this holiday where you feel a) not as happy as you had planned on feeling, b) like ripping someone's head off, or c) fat.
this is because it is a holiday celebrating genocide.
there may also be some moments where you feel pretty ok. this is because you don't have to go to work or school. also: the familial bond, it just won't quit.
and then there may be some times when you don't feel anything at all. try to stay with this feeling as long as possible. don't be afraid. and then, when you can't stand it any more, do a Learning To Love You More asssignment. there are three new ones up, no one has done them yet:
Assignment 67
Repair something.
Assignment 66
Make a field guide to your yard.
Assignment 64
Teach us an exercise.
all my best,
miranda

mix tape early, mix tape late - comme ce, comme ca
Nov's mix tape is actually 2 days early. Can you believe it?! And as a bonus, here's October's mix tape! Only 2 days short of being a month late, but still fresh! Holler at me if you're interested in hearing them. Remember, these mixes are only good for the first 20 people to ask me ask me ask me!

Softlightes residency at Spaceland; Los Angeles
One of my favorite venues in Los Angeles is Spaceland (or as Josh in our NYC office affectionately and mistakingly calls it, Sugarland.) and every Monday night in the month of November, our very own lovies THE SOFTLIGHTES have a residency here! They go on at 11p sharp, and opening up for them will be a fresh crop (different each Monday) of Southern California's best up-and-coming new acts go to the Spaceland site for details. Oh! And Mondays are FREE!!
Tucked in the windy roads of L.A.'s Silverlake neighborhood, The Softlightes are an apt act to set the scene for the holidays and California's version of "winter"...
Especially with their holiday single coming out soon... (Keep a look out for that one, we'll post details soon!)

PS) If you're thinking about dinner before the show - Leela Thai - just 3 or 4 buildings north or Spaceland on the same block has some rad veggie eggrolls & green tea ice cream. I just had some delivered tonight - yum!

Silently Screaming: watching special features on DVDs
Perhaps you have made this observation already, but I'm not one to re-watch movies. I have gone from owning a healthy collection of DVDs, to selling just about EVERYTHING in the collection (that time right before Xmas -or "mass ex"- in 2004 when I felt my material possessions were suffocating me) and currently I only have 25 titles on the shelf.
Tonight I had to do a bunch of photo prints to submit into a potential Spring photo show, which relegates me to sit in my home office for hours - so I decided to watch the special features on The Doors & American Psycho DVDs that I've had for awhile. I completely forgot that Kyle McLaughlan played Ray Manzarek in The Doors. What I couldn't believe is that the production cast said that they weren't sold about Val Kilmer playing the lizard king because he didn't look like him. I was a freshman in high when this movie came out, went to go see it at the mall - and though some of it was dramatized - the understanding of my mother's crazy dresses, smelly incense, one-with-the-earthness and her piano-improvisations of "Love Street" was a little more lucid for me. After that my friends and I became slight fans of the counter-culture of Los Angeles in the 1960s. (Though I feared anyone actually think my mother was cool.) Anyway, I'm straying from my original thought...
What was my original thought?
...Since my last attempt at finishing this entry, I loaned someone American Psycho before exhausting the special features disc. Funny all the worry a publisher went through in dropping the book in the early 90s only to have it be made into a major motion picture not even 10 years after it was published. Also funny how Gloria Steinem was an avid protester protestress against the novel, and her stepson Christian Bale, played the protagonist in the movie adaptation.
Currently: My face feels numb and I'm watching Six Feet Under on HBO On Demand. I was supposed to be in New York tonight, but switched my flight to depart on Thursday.
And for a second I thought...
What a grieving disappointment I was to the other airline passengers. My apologies to whomever wanted to take that flight but settled for another or who paid a higher fare because I added to that % that pushes the price up to the next level. Then I thought about how many grieving disappointments a few people have been to me this week and said FUCK IT.

ModWheelMood's "Things Will Change" album
MODWHEELMOOD
“THINGS WILL CHANGE”
REMIXES OF THE ENEMIES & IMMIGRANTS EP
As of July 2007, the world’s population is an estimated 6,602,224,175. Each of these 6-billion-plus individuals walk away with different interpretations of every event and minute that passes. Within 6 billion different lives - we still find ways to bond, communicate, empathize, and find common ground. Music is merely one medium of communication, yet you can find it in every single corner of the earth. It is as old as history dares to recall, and it is the one thing we likely have in common.
To make an example of some of the many different interpretations people experience, the duo known as ModWheelmood, Alessandro Cortini (Nine Inch Nails) and Pelle Hillstrom (Abandoned Pools, Forever Like Red), and The 857 Collective’s Celeste Tabora recruited their friends and colleagues to remix their Enemies & Immigrants EP. Modwheelmood have set out to give back to humankind en mass not just with the gift of song, but a little more proactively. All the proceeds of this remix album are set to go to Los Angeles based charity, Create Now, whose mission is to change troubled children's lives through creative arts mentoring, resources and opportunities. In addition, with conservation and the environment in mind – the always forward-thinking Modwheelmood has opted to go digital-only with this release, omitting the need for materials such as compact discs, paper, and jewel cases – while giving the listener a more immediate one-click experience in obtaining these remixes.
